Discover the Sofitel Winter Palace Luxor, which was once the favorite holiday destination of George Herbert, the 5th Earl of Carnarvon.

Sofitel Winter Palace Luxor was constructed during the historic reign of the United Kingdom’s famed Queen Victoria, who sat on the British throne from 1837 to 1901.

Built in 1886 by British explorers, Sofitel Winter Palace Luxor is situated on the Nile River amid luxuriant tropical gardens and ancient temples. This magnificent historic hotel blends rich colonial design with the glory of ancient Egypt. For years, the building played host to many of the leading families from both Europe and Asia. One such regular was George Herbert, the 5th Earl of Carnarvon. Lord Carnarvon was the patron of British Egyptologist Howard Carter, who located the tomb of King Tutankhamen in the 1920s. Shortly after Carter’s discovery was made public, the Winter Palace played host to the international press corps and foreign visitors there to follow the story. Carter used the hotel's noticeboard to deliver occasional news and information about the tomb. Today, the Sofitel Winter Palace Luxor remains a popular destination among those interested in exploring Egypt’s storied history.
