One such regular was George Herbert, the 5th Earl of Carnarvon. Lord Carnarvon was the patron of British Egyptologist Howard Carter, who located the tomb of King Tutankhamen in the 1920s. Shortly after Carter’s discovery was made public, the Winter Palace played host to the international press corps and foreign visitors there to follow the story. Carter used the hotel's noticeboard to deliver occasional news and information about the tomb.
