Discover Hotel Waldhaus Sils, which was first opened in 1908 under the direction of renowned hoteliers Josef and Amalie Giger.
A member of Historic Hotels Worldwide since 2014, Hotel Waldhaus Sils was constructed in the years leading up to World War I. The Waldhaus first opened its doors to guests in 1908 under the direction of Josef Giger and his wife, Amalie. For many years, the two had managed hotels abroad in Russia, Italy, and Bad Ragaz in Switzerland. After plenty of time spent managing hotels, the Gigers now owned their dream hotel. Their daughter Helen and her husband Oskar Kienberger took control of the business after her parents retired. Helen and Oskar's son Rolf then assumed responsibility through until 1977, when Maria and Felix Dietrich-Kienberger took up the mantle. They would operate the Hotel Waldus Sils for the next 33 years, first with Maria's parents and then with Maria's brother Urs Kienberger.
The hotel is now currently managed by brothers Claudio and Patrick Dietrich. Claudio ensures the excellence of the hotel's food and drink, while Patrick oversees the hotel's accommodations. Urs Kienberger, the Dietrich's uncle, continues in his position as CIO, or "Chief Intellectual Officer." With no outside managers or shareholders, the Hotel Waldhaus Sils is truly a family affair. Upwards of three million Swiss francs are spent each year to ensure the best experience and environment for the hotel's guests. The hotel's size, despite these marvelous improvements, has remained, deliberately, the same as when it first opened. Otherwise, the brothers believe, they would not be able to care and cater to guests the same way their ancestors did originally. Their exceptional care has been rewarded with accolades, such as being named the Swiss “Historic Hotel of the Year” in 2005 by ICOMOS Switzerland, the International Council on Monuments and Sites.
